Blacktown Psychiatric Hospital

In July 2005 the NSW Minister for Health announced the establishment of 9 Psychiatric Emergency Care Centres (PECCs) for metropolitan areas, as part of the broader Mental Health Emergency Care Services program (MHECS).

The service model for the PECC required co-location with the Emergency Department (ED) at each hospital since patients are transferred between the ED and PECC.

The Blacktown PECC project was undertaken in an operating hospital environment and therefore careful planning and site management was essential to ensure that minimal disruption was experienced by staff, patients and general public at the hospital.

The works involved the refurbishment and extension of the existing mental hospital into new treatment rooms, office space, amenities and patient bedrooms. Careful decanting and phasing of the works was required to undertake the various components of work within the existing building.
